PROJECTS SHOWCASE

Successful Collaborations With

Lagoon Beach Hotel - Restaurant

The Brasserie restaurant in The Lagoon Beach Hotel. Upgrade of the the dated ceiling lights, in keeping with the aquatic theme and simplifying maintenance and cleaning, while improving the acoustic quality of the space.

Brief:
Upgrade the lighting to the in-house restaurant as it was installed ca. 2000. Maintenance had become very difficult and the fittings had discoloured due to UV exposure. The old design was inspired by an ocean theme, but it was a hard material and didn’t enhance any acoustics in the space. The hotel requested new fittings that didn’t retain insects that inevitably got stuck; while maintaining easy maintenance, cleanliness, and aesthetics.

Outcome:
Replaced the hard, surface-mounted lights with wire-frame pendants covered with white fabric. This was still in keeping with the ocean theme, as the new lights represented sea urchins. The fabric was softer for acoustics’ sake, and the opening at the bottom permitted easy access to replace light bulbs in the future and prevented insects from getting trapped. We reduced the quantity of the lights to calm the space down, visually, but kept the lamps bright to maintain light levels when needed. We also added dimming to the space for adjustable ambiance.
The client was very happy as we came in on a very reasonable budget and timeline, and the regular guests & visitors to the hotel all had positive feedback after the upgrade

Lagoon Beach Hotel - Conference Centres

Brief:
The hotel approached me to help upgrade the lighting the two smaller conference facilities, as well as the large ball-room sized conference rooms. The lighting needed to be brighter, more energy efficient, and have better lighting control options for their guests then the existing installation.

Outcome:
The smaller conference rooms had existing downlights, so we needed to specify lighting that could fit in the existing cut-outs, to avoid replacing the whole ceiling. We supplied 80x 17W downlights in a neutral 4000K, that can dim with regular wall-mounted dimmers, to ensure the variable option for SANS-compliant light levels at full brightness, but lower light levels for visual presentations using the overhead projectors.

The larger conference rooms we replaced the existing halogen downlights with the same specification downlight as the smaller rooms, but in warm white. This was also dimmable and provided SANS-compliant light levels at full brightness. In these conference areas, we added 9m long LED linears in 4000K neutral white, to add to the lighting when needed, but controlled separately from the downlights (which are all controlled separately per ceiling panel). This allows the space to be used for events that require more ambiance (warm white light), and alternatively for events that require more focus (neutral white light)

The Copper Club Sandown

The Copper Club Sandown is part of a franchise of restaurants with a very distinct brand and style. Full fit-out for the restaurant, bar, kitchens and pizzeria.

Brief:
The designer for The Copper Club needed a reliable lighting supplier to provide pendants, downlights, festoon lights & utility lighting to the back of house areas, in a very short timeframe. Due to the boutique nature of Mask. Design, we were able to procure all the items needed, make the needed adjustments and custom pieces, and deliver in time for the restaurant to open.

Outcome:
The Copper Club Sandown has a lovely stoep and garden area, with pizza ovens, as well as the bar area with tables and chairs. Mask. also assisted with LED strip lighting to highlight the unique joinery items. The exterior lighting ties in with the general design of the project, while providing ambience and security to the guests and their vehicles.

Telkom Store (Retail)

Brief:
The client required blue LED strips that would be suitable to be recessed into the floor for walking over; as well as blue LED strips that could seamlessly integrate into the joinery design to enhance the design and brand of Telkom.

Outcome:
Challenges with floor lighting is 1) cleaning – making sure the product is waterproof, and 2) making sure it’s impact-resistant. We sourced a durable, near-unbreakable aluminium profile & diffuser that housed an IP65-rated LED strip, in the signature blue of the Telkom brand. We supplied these with the required controllers to the site. Pre-made to fit, we had close coordination between the team in JHB and the suppliers in CPT. The client was thrilled that we could do what they needed, for costs within their budget, in the tight deadline before the store opened.

Signature showroom

Signature Group’s showroom in Paarl; under counter and in-joinery LED strip lighting, as well as general and decorative lighting.

Decorex Cape Town 2023

Brief:
Lighting a showcase kitchen for Signature Joiners at CPT Decorex 2023 exhibit.
Using LED strips to show lighting choices in a kitchen, and do’s and don’ts.

Outcome:
Successful weekend with the kitchen showing how the light looks better & more seamless when in a slightly deeper profile. This small change allows better diffusion of the light so you don’t see the individual LED chips.

Corporate Office, Portside Building, Cape Town

Corporate Office for international client. All lighting as per the interior designers, custom made linear pieces, combined with regular retail items, and a few custom made desk lamps and pendants.

Brief:
The design firm that handled the design of an international renewable energy supplier, had firm design ideas for the corporate headquarters in South Africa. Mask. was asked to tender for the supply of all the specialist and decor lighting, as the landlord was supplying the regular office light-fittings. Mask. was required for the engineering design to ensure the public spaces complied with SANS regulations.

Outcome:
Mask. won the tender and supplied custom-made linear lighting for the reception, waiting area, and boardrooms. The smaller meeting rooms had custom-made linear profiles that offer both up- and down-lighting to allow better light levels for video conferencing. The decor items were also made to order to suit the Scandinavian design style for the office, and this was combined with more standard track-and-spot lighting, and LED strips to add ambiance. We also designed and commissioned custom table lamps for the work-areas.

Mask’s only critique of this project was that the designers insisted all the lighting be neutral white, with no variation in the reception or pause areas. This is not the ideal situation as human-centric lighting encourages variation of intensity and temperature, and ideally, light that changes throughout the day.

Private Home, Piketberg

Client with a large, beautiful farmhouse, full reconstruction and renovation of the existing building.

Feature areas are the kitchen, wine cellar and entertainment room.

Brief:
Client started a small remodel of their farmhouse and eventually re-did 85% of the building with all new finishes, lighting, furniture and a new roof.
We had consultation meetings regarding the lighting layouts, electrical reticulation requirements, and finally the lighting supply and installation.

Outcome:
All technical and decorative lighting supplied to all areas; bedrooms, bathrooms (with moisture compliant fittings), bedside lights, kitchen lighting, both task and decorative; highlighting architectural details in the living areas with massive timber beams exposed; and simple lighting control elements like motion sensors for night-lights in guest areas and the kitchen.

Private Home, Val De Vie (Waterlily Project)

Private residential lighting fit-out, with custom work on the foyer & art walls. Overall lighting supply to home & landscaping.

Brief:
The client was building a new home and needed all lighting specified and supplied. The scope included all the landscaping, exterior lighting to building(s) & utility areas, all interior technical lighting, all interior decor lighting & LED strips, as well as a custom-designed & manufactured wall sculpture with integrated lights, instead of a typical chandelier in the double volume foyer.

Outcome:
The house was designed and built within the set parameters of the estate, so there were guidelines to adhere to regarding landscaping & exterior lighting.
The technical lighting needed to accommodate the clients’ vast art collection while staying within a preset budget. The LED strips were supplied while working closely with the joiner and the general contractor.

The custom wall sculpture was built in collaboration with Monfalcone Design; laser cut steel sheets, hand-shaped and painted with the regulation wiring to permit it installed. These are inspired by the clients love of water & water-lilies, while the teal and gold colours echo all the finishes & specifications throughout the house.

The client also required suitable ‘showroom’ style lighting for his garage and vintage car collection on display.

Private Home, Val De Vie (Pearl Valley)

Brief:
A private client required technical lighting for a new home build. The decor lighting was supplied via the architect as they chose various large, ornate chandeliers for all the areas, and this needed to tie in with the greater design scheme.

Outcome:
Practical lights in areas like the walk-in dressing room, where the lighting performance of the chandelier was not suitable for a wardrobe of this scale. Supplied understated track lighting to the kitchen island area, where there were challenges with concrete slabs and difficulty adding lights after the fact, but the client didn’t want any fixtures hanging down or stealing attention.
Supplied all exterior lighting as per estate regulations, and assisted with the joiners to provide LED strip lighting to cupboards as required.

Private Home, Val De Vie (The Acres)

Brief:
This home had a distinctly minimalist requirement – the client wanted to see no light fixtures but needed to showcase art. All recessed and concealed lighting was required, with a few surface-mounted profiles in the key areas of the home.

Outcome:
This is an ongoing project with discussion on resolving a few last items, but the lighting in all the rooms is subtle, with under cabinet lighting in bathrooms and the kitchen, and LED strips in the wardrobes. This eliminated the requirement for many ceiling-mounted fittings.

Welbedacht Nature Reserve

Brief:
The architect needed solutions to a new build events venue that offered multiple lighting options for weddings, conferences and special events. The design included a lot of natural stone and vast vistas of the surrounding nature reserve, so protection of the environment from light pollution was important. There was a design for a lot of water surrounding the building and a green wall on the interior. The design also included the back of-house areas, public restrooms and the exterior of the building.

Outcome:
Mask. specified 9m LED linear profiles with double LED strips; 3000K warm and 4000K neutral that can be used separately or in conjunction to create the required light colour and brightness in the main hall. Conferences need very different lighting than a wedding, so the options now exist for either. We specified small specialist lights that accentuate the openings and archways, as well as very discreet, low-level lighting to the entrance steps. In all areas, the adjustable spotlights can focus on the walkways, or the texture of the walls.
The one wall of the building has RGBW profiles that wash down the timber panelling, again adding the option for any event requirements. (Phase 02 of this project includes a large wall of fibre optic lights to this same panel, to echo the stars that can be seen through the roof that can slide open)
The exterior lighting was specified to be all down-facing, part of the philosophy of the Dark Sky International group. All lighting temperates are warm white (except the main linears), to reduce blue-light pollution in the nature reserve.
The green wall in the interior has a special profile with a-symmetrical beam angles to focus the light on the wall, and avoid glare from the koi-pond below at the same time.

The lighting in the bathrooms was kept simple and contemporary, allowing all the natural materials and finishes to take centre stage.

As of March 2024, the project is ongoing.

The Rubik

Brief:
The architects required a specific chandelier/lighting pendant design that they included in the client presentation but didn’t realise that the original design would be too small for the space in which they needed to use it. Mask. designed a custom piece based on the same detailing and oversaw manufacture before installation.

Outcome:
Using square tubing that was sprayed with a satin gold finish, custom mounting points for re-purposed glass shades. We ensured that the light sources for all the balls were replaceable light bulbs, as this makes future maintenance far easier. Custom-made ceiling cups allow this to be recessed for a flush finish, rather than the typical mounting that protrudes from the ceiling overhead.
Stainless steel suspension cables secure the light and allow adjustable heights on installation.

As of March 2024, this is an ongoing project and installation has not been completed.

The Terraces, Newlands (restaurant) - ongoing project

Brief:
A repeat client (designer) needed a wide variety of pendants to hang as feature lighting in a newly built restaurant. The timeline was very tight and the aesthetic challenged what stock was available and what would suit the space.

Outcome:
Supplied the required lighting with suitable lamps for all the areas within the limited timeframe, and added downlights to ensure the general areas were compliant with SANS lighting regulations.

School Auditorium

Full design & specification for school multi-purpose auditorium. Close coordination with the architect to ensure compliance & accommodation of all services required.

Custom LED lighting

Special installation of LED strip lighting in to vintage furniture to highlight clients’ valuables.

Private House, Gordon’s Bay

Supplied and consulted with the client on overall lighting design and supply for a new home. LED strips to stairs was a special feature with automated switching included.
